Harry Potter Broom Pastries
Are these not the cutest broomstick pastries? Crisp, flakey puff pastry coated in cinnamon sugar, baked to perfection with a delicious cookie butter and a vegan ‘Nutella’ filling.
I watched Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone the other day and was inspired by the flying lesson scene to make these delicious little treats. I am the biggest Harry Potter fan, and had such fun making this recipe. If you love Harry Potter and have a soft spot for themed / spooky baking… you’ll love these! - Ready in under 30 minutes.
- Perfectly flaky – you’d never know they’re dairy free and vegan!

- Fun to make with different fillings (see below for ideas!).
Ingredients you’ll need
These broomstick pastries only require a few simple ingredients, mot of which you may already have in your kitchen cupboard / pantry! You can also find the full written recipe, ingredients list and method in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Puff pastry : You want to use a vegan friendly puff pastry. My favourite is the Vegan and gluten-free puff pastry sheets from JusRol, but this depends on where you live as I’m not sure this is stocked in all countries. Puff pastry can be found down the chilled isle of most supermarkets. You can easily make this recipe gluten-free by using a gluten-free pastry (also make sure the fillings you use are gluten-free too!).
- Dairy-free milk: The milk is brushed over the pastries to help with browning in the oven. It also helps the pastry crips up too. You can use any dairy-free milk including soya, oat, almond and cashew for example.
- Sugar : The sugar is sprinkled over the top of the milk glaze before baking. This helps with the golden colour and really helps to crisp up the top of the pastries when baked. You can use fine white caster sugar or white granulated sugar for even more crunch.
- Cinnamon : This is an added extra, but to give the pastries a-little more flavour, sprinkle some ground cinnamon in the sugar to make a delicious spiced cinnamon sugar.
- Spread : I opted for two different fillings for my broomsticks, Biscoff ‘cookie butter’ spread and a vegan friendly ‘Nutella’. You could also use a fruity jam or even go savoury with some pesto and vegan cheese!
- Pretzel sticks : Use some long pretzel sticks or the broom handle. If you don’t have or can’t find the pretzels, you can use some chocolate
Additional filling ideas:
If you don’t want to make these Harry Potter Broom Pastries with sweet cookie butter or chocolate spread , you can also fill these pastries with:
- Vegan friendly pesto and cheese for a savoury snack.
- Fresh strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries with a vegan cream cheese filling.
- Pumpkin spice sugar.
- Vegan cheese – I like to sprinkle in some black pepper and sea salt.
- Fruit jams – strawberry, raspberry or apricot.
- Tomato sauce and vegan cheese for a pizza vibe.
- Plain melted chocolate.

Description
These Harry Potter Broom Pastries are a fast and easy last minute Halloween Puff Pastry Recipe. Only a few simple ingredients is all you need, and a ton of fun! Not only delicious but the kids will have a great time helping you make these spooky treats!
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 – 2 sheets of puff pastry (homemade or store bought)
- 4 tablespoons of white caster sugar / granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons of dairy-free milk
- 1 jar of spread (you can use Biscoff or vegan ‘Nutella’)
- Pretzel sticks
Instructions
Method
- Preheat oven to 180° C fan and line a baking tray with grease proof paper.
- In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon, stir together and set aside.
- Unfold the puff pastry sheet and cut into 6 – 8 squares / rectangles.
- Spread some spread (vegan ‘Nutella’ or Biscoff spread) over half of the pastry squares. Brush the edges with some dairy-free milk and lay another pastry square on top to sandwich.
- Use a sharp knife or pizza roller, cut lines into the pastry (see video for reference), this is for the broom bristles. Don’t cut all the way through, you want to leave approximately 1/4 inch border at the top for the pretzel ‘broom handle’.
- Place a pretzel stick to the top of the pastry and roll the pastry around the bottom of the stick (see video and phots for reference), creating the broom shape.
- Lay the pastries on the baking tray. Give them a-little space as the pastry will puff up in the oven.
- Brush the pastries with some dairy-free milk and sprinkle over the cinnamon sugar.
- Place into the middle of the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and flakey.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the pastries to cool fully before removing from the tray and serving.
Notes
To store: Best enjoyed fresh, day of making. Also delicious warmed up in the oven! They can be stored in an air tight / sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
